SESSION A
PANEL DISCUSSION

Chekov’s Guns, McGuffins and Red Herrings:
The Tropes of Crime Writing
Michael Wilding, Gabrielle Lord and Barry Maitland

10:00-11:30am in the Tom Keneally Centre

Providing touchstones for readers, tropes like ‘the butler did it’ or the alcoholic detective commonly crop up in stories because they are universally relatable. Include too many tropes, though, or use one that is too tired and the writer veers towards cliche.

Michael Wilding, Gabrielle Lord and Barry Maitland discuss the changing tropes of crime writing and how to revitalise and use them to your advantage.
