Such Pretty Flowers by K. L. Cerra
After Holly’s brother’s death was ruled a suicide, Holly can’t shake the idea that something else must have happened… something involving a “game” with his girlfriend, Maura. Determined to discover the truth, Holly begins to stalk Maura – a magnetic, black-eyed florist with a penchant for carnivorous plants. But what begins as an investigation quickly turns into a darker fixation, one that lures Holly into the depths of Maura’s world and her deadly secrets.
This debut novel introduces Holly with her realistic flaws about guilt and grief, that makes you relate to her instantly. Maura’s character is well developed and even the insights about her past strongly impacted the plot, because who doesn’t love a killer botanist with an interest in the dark arts! Also, the twisted chemistry between these two was on point throughout the story, adding an extra fragrance of compulsion or obsession to a traditional romance plot.
This is a dark suspenseful story is full of paranoia that it will have you on the edge of your seat as you start to second guess yourself if Holly is actually crazy or not. The slow burn at the start and unique secondary characters only makes the intense plot ending even more addicting.
Cerra has done an amazing job keeping this book unpredictable and very haunting, that it will stay with you even after you have long placed the book down. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.
