The Cuckoo’s Calling is a great mystery in a classic vein. Although presented as a debut novel, it has recently been uncovered that Robert Galbraith is, in fact, J K Rowling’s pseudonym! After losing half his leg to a landmine in Afghanistan, Cormoron Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike has only one client and the creditors are calling. He has just broken up with his long-time girlfriend and is living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through the door with an amazing story: Bristow’s adopted sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. Being desperate to earn some money, this case soon plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaires, beauties, rockstar boyfriends, and desperate designers. I loved the character of Strike, his size, his caring attitude and fearless quest to uncover the truth. This is a very well written mystery and it is hard to guess the killer, which comes as a complete surprise. Cannot wait to read more of Cormoron Strike.
