Author Review: Shamini Flint (Updated)
Shamini Flint was a lawyer who is married with 2 children. She lives in Singapore and is a stay-at-home mum who writes children’s and adult books. The SMSA library doesn’t carry children’s books, but it does have all 6 of her Inspector Singh series that are available so far, with the latest due to be released April 2016.
Inspector Singh is a henpecked, portly, slightly dishevelled Singaporean policeman who investigates murders across South East Asia. I have enjoyed this series and hope more are still to come.
The books
Inspector Singh Investigates: A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder (2009)
The portly, methodical Inspector Singh is a thorn in the side of his bosses on the Singapore police
department, so they send him off to Malaysia to monitor the trial of Chelsea Liew.
Inspector Singh Investigates: A Bali Conspiracy Most Foul (2009)
Inspector Singh is back, but this time on secondment to Bali. A bomb has exploded and Singh has been sent to help with anti-terrorism efforts. But a body is found!
Inspector Singh Investigates: The Singapore School of Villainy (2010)
Inspector Singh is home – and how he wishes he wasn’t. His wife nags him at breakfast and his superiors are whiling away their time by giving him his usual ‘you’re a disgrace to the Force’ lecture.
Inspector Singh Investigates: A Deadly Cambodian Crime Spree (2011)
Inspector Singh is in Cambodia – wishing he wasn’t. He’s been sent as an observer to the international war crimes tribunal in Phnom Penh, the latest effort by his superiors to ensure that he is anywhere, except in Singapore.
Inspector Singh Investigates: A Curious Indian Cadaver (2012)
Inspector Singh goes to Mumbai to go to a family wedding. The bride to be disappears and Singh is asked by the patriarch of the family to investigate.
Inspector Singh Investigates: A Calamitous Chinese Killing (2013)
Inspector Singh is on a mission to China, against his better judgment. The son of a bigwig at the Singapore Embassy has been bludgeoned to death in a back alley in Beijing.
Inspector Singh Investigates: A frightfully English Execution (2016)
Inspector Sing is irate. He’s been instructed to attend a Commonwealth conference on policing in London: a job for paper pushers, not real cops, as far as he is concerned. And as if that isn’t bad enough, his wife is determined to come along to shop for souvenirs and visit previously unknown relatives. But it isn’t long before the cold case that lands on Singh’s ample lap turns into a hot potato.
