I cannot describe it better than Backman describes it himself in his introduction:

“This is a story about memories and about letting go. It’s a love letter and a slow farewell between a man and his grandson and between a dad and his boy.”

The intended audience is anyone who has had to say that slow farewell. Just beautiful…
