VIRTUAL VIEWING PARTY Servant or Slave (2016)

Date & Time
Servant or Slave is an emotional and confronting insight into the history and legacy of the domestic servitude enforced upon Aboriginal girls in Australia, told through the firsthand accounts of five women. Many thousands of girls were stolen as young children from their parents and placed in institutions, to be trained as domestic servants and be ‘assimilated’ into mainstream Australian society.
Rita Wright, Violet West and sisters Adelaide Wenberg, Valerie Linow and Rita Wenberg endured immense hardship, rape and even torture. Forced to work as domestic servants, with the government exercising complete control over their wages , they were effectively condemned to officially sanctioned slavery from which there was little hope of escape.
Servant or Slave observes the strength and determination of these courageous women as they pursue justice for the crimes committed against them.

The forcible removal of Aboriginal children from their families is a painful truth of modern Australian history, but it is a history half told. The accounts of five Aboriginal women stolen from their families as young girls reveal another agonising dimension to this story.
