About the talk

This special talk by Bonnie Werner will explore how the Gynaecological Cancer Research Group is improving outcomes for women with ovarian & endometrial cancer using cutting-edge and ethically minded science.

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest out of all cancers of the female reproductive organs. One of the major issues that contributes to the poor survival of ovarian cancer is that it is usually diagnosed when the cancer has already spread, that is, at ‘late-stage’. Only 4/10 women with ovarian cancer will survive for 5 years after receiving the diagnosis. One of the reasons that ovarian cancer is diagnosed late is because there is no screening test to capture women with small, easy-to-resect (surgically remove) tumours. When ovarian cancer is detected at early stage, 9/10 women survive after 5 years of diagnosis.

Come along to the talk to learn more about the significant work that the Gynaecological Cancer Research Group is doing and learn more about Ovarian Cancer. The more you know the better for you and your loved ones.

About Bonnie Werner

Bonnie Werner is a PhD candidate in the Gynaecological Cancer Research Group, mentored by Dr Kristina Warton and Prof. Caroline Ford. Bonnie’s research focuses on ovarian cancer, with a special interest in ascites – a common symptom of ovarian cancer, characterised by a pathological accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. The goal of Bonnie’s research is to take advantage of the accessibility of ascites fluid (which is drained to relieve the discomfort it causes) by studying the DNA in the fluid to find disease drivers which can be targeted with precision medicines. Bonnie has recently returned from a sponsored visit to the National Cancer Institute of the USA, where she was working towards these research goals.
