What’s OnSchindler’s List: 30th Anniversary – Talk & Film Screening (RESCHEDULED)
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Schindler’s List, join us for a special screening of the film with an introduction from Tom Keneally and Peter Rainey.
Join us for a special 30th Anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s cinematic masterpiece, Schindler’s List (1993). Steven Spielberg has given SMSA special permission to screen the film to celebrate this significant anniversary. The film will be introduced by Tom Keneally, writer of Schindler’s Ark (1982) which inspired Spielberg to make the film, in conversation with Peter Rainey, SMSA Member & organiser of the SMSA Classic Film Program.

Synopsis
Winner of seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, this incredible true story follows the enigmatic Oskar Schindler, who saved the lives of more than 1100 Jews during the Holocaust. It is the triumph of one man who made a difference and the story of those who survived one of the darkest chapters in human history because of what he did. Schindler’s List is a powerful story whose lessons of courage and faith continue to inspire generations.
About Tom Keneally
Tom Keneally is one of Australia’s best known and most respected authors, writing both fiction and non-fiction. Born in 1935, he has published more than 35 novels, 18 non-fiction works and several plays since 1964. In 1982 he won the Man Booker Prize for Schindler’s Ark (1982), later made into the Academy Award-winning film Schindler’s List (1993) by Steven Spielberg.
Keneally’s latest work Fanatic Heart was published in 2022. This fictional work follows the tale of Irish patriot John Mitchel and retells his life and exploits. It particularly focuses on his time in exile on Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania).
Tom Keneally has won the Miles Franklin Award, the Booker Prize, the Los Angeles Book Prize, the Royal Society of Literature Prize, the Scripter Award of the University of Southern California, the Mondello International Prize and the Helmerich Prize. He was recently awarded the 2022 ARA Historical Novel Prize (Adult Category) for Corporal Hitler’s Pistol (2021). Keneally lives in Sydney with his wife, and is Number 1 ticket-holder of the Manly-Warringah Rugby League team.
SMSA is home to the Tom Keneally Centre which is Tom Keneally’s living legacy to Australia, holding books that have significance to him. The centre is open to all. It hosts Keneally’s research collection as well as other memorabilia. Everyone is welcome to visit and SMSA Members may borrow from the collection. It can also be hired as a venue through our Venue Hire team for literary activities such as writing classes, readings and author talks.
About Peter Rainey
Peter Rainey is an SMSA member and cinema enthusiast. He is a former Program Director for a Queensland Cinema Group and he worked for 40 years in the education profession. Peter Rainey organises our Classic Film Program at SMSA and brings his passion for films to the SMSA.
This event will be held in person at the Henry Carmichael Theatre, Level 1, 280 Pitt Street Sydney.
